| SHORT-TERM
WORKSHOPS
Here is a sampling of the many workshops that Rebecca McClanahan
conducts.
Suggested time period: 2-4 hours |
| Making Music With Words |
This workshop
focuses on developing the "ear" of a poet. McClanahan will lead participants
through writing activities designed to generate richly-textured passages
which will then be incorporated into original poems. |
|
Priming the Pump:
Poems to Get You Started |
Using her
own poems as examples, Rebecca McClanahan leads participants through
a series of writing exercises designed to prime the pump for poems
or prose pieces. Subjects include portraits of people, memories, dreams,
catalogues and lists, and experiments in sound and form. |
|
| Romancing the Poem |
If you've
never had an affair with poetry, or if you wish to rekindle your passion,
this is the workshop for you. Rebecca McClanahan will help participants
break down barriers that keep them from enjoying poetry, and demonstrate
new and unusual approaches to reading and writing poems. |
|
Creative Nonfiction:
What is it, and How do I Begin? |
What distinguishes
a work of nonfiction from a work of creative nonfiction? This workshop
suggests answers to this question, with particular emphasis on techniques
used by published writers, including personal voice, narrative structure,
dialogue, attention to detail, and movement between summary and scene.
Participants are led through reading and writing activities that may
serve as starting places for longer pieces. |
|
LONG-TERM
WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES
These workshops and classes are intended to be conducted over several
sessions.
Suggested time frame (unless otherwise indicated) a minimum of five
3-hour sessions. |
| Introduction
to
Creative Nonfiction |
This workshop
introduces various forms of creative nonfiction, including memoir,
portrait, personal essay, literary journalism, meditation, lyric and
segmented essays, and experimental forms. Participants write and share
brief weekly assignments, discuss issues of craft and creativity,
and learn how to shape nonfiction pieces that retain a personal voice
while still exploring universal questions. |
|
| Advanced
Creative Nonfiction |
This workshop,
an extension of "Introduction to Creative Nonfiction," focuses on
shaping creative nonfiction pieces for the reader's eye. Though participants
will continue to write and share brief weekly assignments and discuss
issues surrounding creative nonfiction, Rebecca McClanahan will also
provide helpful responses to these drafts and suggest possibilities
for revision. |
|
| Word Painting:
Writing More Descriptively |
Since all
forms of writing utilize description--poetry, novels, essays, stories,
biographies, or articles--all writers can benefit from increasing
their descriptive powers. This hands-on workshop focuses on painting
word pictures that are accurate, sensory, fresh, and evocative, and
which contribute to the overall story, poem, or nonfiction piece.
Workshop time will be devoted to in-class writing and reading activities,
informal lectures, and attention to works-in-progress. |
|
| Memoir Writing |
How can
you shape your personal memories into a piece of writing that others
will want to read? This workshop suggests answers to this question,
with particular emphasis on techniques such as narrative structure,
dialogue, scene building, reflection, and movement between private
and public issues. Participants will share works in progress, experiment
with new forms, and encourage each other to find the universal residing
within their personal stories. |

| What's
In Your Heart:
Explorations Through Poetry
(suggested audience: grades 3-8) |
These
workshops focus on poetry as a natural expression of our deepest joys,
fears, and dreams. After introducing students to published poems in
various forms, Rebecca McClanahan assists them in writing poems of
their own, individually or in small group settings. She also encourages
them to present their poems orally and to revise them for publication.
