Lectures,
Speeches, and Presentations
Rebecca McClanahan delivers lectures, speeches, and informal talks
to writers,
civic and community groups,
students, teachers, and the general public.
Here is a small sampling of possible presentations: |
One Small Grief:
Tracking the Personal Riddle
|
Through writing, we can
begin to uncover the unconscious patterns of our lives and discover
what Stanley Kunitz calls each person's "constellation of images."
In this talk, Rebecca McClanahan suggests ways to write your way into
an understanding of your own personal myth. |

I Dream So Wildly:
Children and Poetry
|
For over fifteen years,
as writer-in-residence for a large metropolitan school district, Rebecca
McClanahan worked with thousands of children, encouraging them to
express their joys, fears, and dreams through poetry. In this presentation,
she shares students' poems and discusses what these poems can teach
us about children, life, art, and ourselves. |
|
Composting:
Notes From a Writer's Journal
|
A writer's composing process can
be likened to the process of composting; organic material, which might
otherwise have been discarded, feeds the soil for future crops. This
talk, "composted" from journal entries written over a ten-year
period, provides an insider's view of the daily life of a writer and
suggests how even the smallest entry can work its way into future
work. |

| Poetry in Our Lives
|
Poetry is not an educational frill,
a disposable enrichment activity for a gifted few; it is one of life's
necessities, as essential to our human spirit as bread, air, or water
is to our bodies. This talk focuses on the benefits of poetry reading
and writing, and suggests ways to make poetry part of our everyday
lives. |
